Oct 28th 2011, my 85 year old dad lost his drivers license because of dementia. It's a good thing but it is a sad thing. How strange would it be after driving for 70 years and now not being able to.
He started driving at 15, got his license at 17. then drove truck for 50 yrs,, taught guys to drive. Now he's told he can't. It has been sad to see him but he seems to have excepted it. He says he's always had a good driving record and we've told him it isn't because of the driving record but because of the dementia.
He didn't know what that was so I showed him an article in a medical book.
His favorite thing is to go to the truck stop. not just to eat but so he can see the truckers and the trucks drivng in and out. They let us play cards and we try to go at lest 2 times a week. The waitresses there are very sweet to him as he has been around since they opened in the 70"s.
Sometimes it has been hard taking care of him, but one day I will be able to look back and know that it was a privaledge to be there for him as long as I could.
My song now is "ONE DAY AT A TIME SWEET JESUS'.
